Communication Disorders

Communication disorders, affecting both young as well as school-aged children and young adults, are areas that are addressed. Following a meeting to gather personal information concerning the problem, a one-on-one assessment is conducted. A confidential written report is then provided and  decisions are made about therapy goals and number of sessions recommended to achieve these goals. With very young children, the therapist may work as a consultant teaching parents how to help their child. However, in most cases, the therapist will work directly with the child for 30 minute sessions once a week or up to three times a week depending on the severity of the problem and the wishes of the parent(s).  Older clients are generally seen for 45 minute sessions.

Testimonials

Two of my children have been clients of Dr. Katherine Schetz. She is professional, kind and caring. I particularly like the way that she responds to the children and praises them. My son had a lisp that was beyond the capability of the school therapist to treat and children teased him about it. After about two months of therapy with Dr. Schetz, the problem disappeared. And this was after the public school had treated him for a year! He is so much more confident now and he is no longer reluctant to speak in public. My youngest daughter had problems enunciating the words that she knew and she also had a limited vocabulary. Her preschool teachers were very concerned, and she ranked low on the age-specific speech tests. We started her with Dr. Schetz when she was four, and six months later when her kindergarten teacher found out that she had speech therapy, she was incredulous. She told me that my daughter was one of the best speakers in the class! I enthusiastically recommend Dr. Schetz. She has worked wonders with our children.

Our son came to us with significant sensory deprivation, developmental delays, and unknown history. We chose Kathy for help because of her reputation and her credentials, and she worked with us for three and one half years bringing our son to age level skills. What we came to realize was that her skills go far beyond speech and language, which is what makes her such an incredible therapist. She sees the child as a special and wonderful developing person, identifies their strengths, and is able to treat a myriad of areas in an amazing symphony that is an incredible woven plan with each session touching on each area of need and building on the last one. She combines her knowledge of speech as well as language, pragmatics, social skills, and sensory needs to not only help children to communicate, but to allow them to have the necessary skills to be able to get along with others, socialize, and build self confidence. She ties all this in with literacy, body language, insight, empathy, and the ability to adapt to different environments. Her ability to work on such a variety of skills in such a fluid way was impressive. I highly recommend her for any parent with concerns about their child that would like care and support in addition to therapy.

My son has been seeing Mrs. Schetz now for quite a while. The difference in my son from the first time he saw her up till now is astonishing. His speech, vocabulary, reading comprehension, reasoning, and problem solving skills have advanced considerably. Her ability to truly see where my son's weaknesses lie and then work to improve on them has been monumental in his development and academic success at school.
